Hey!  Late post this week, but it's been really busy, both at work and at home.
I can barely remember the weekend.  I mean, I really can't remember how we spent our time.  One of the good things about keeping a blog is just keeping track of how you spend your time.  It might seem sort of pedestrian from week to week, but it's often fun to go back a year or two later and see what we were up to at a particular point in time.

I don't really remember Friday that well.  I know they finally came and installed the correct door at our house (we had purchased a new door months back, and they came and installed one with the wrong window in it.  We had to threaten to sue them to finally get Lowe's to come fix it).

On Saturday I think we mostly hung out at the house.  I truly can't remember.

Saturday bubble party in the yard with Kiddo and Raylan
Saturday night we got a babysitter and went out to see Captain Marvel at the movie theater near our house.  It was... okay.  I didn't think it was nearly as fun or as well written as some of the other Marvel movies.  Brie Larson was fine, but I thought the writing was pretty mediocre.  Still, it was fun to get out of the house.

On Sunday we took the kids to the South Austin Recreation Center to play on their playground.  They had a good time.  It's a nice playground, and there were a number of dogs there, which made Kiddo really happy.  She loves dogs.

Raylan practices for life aboard a space station.

Later on Sunday I took Kiddo to a TuneBugz music class for little kids while Amy went running with Raylan in a stroller (he's really too big for it, so it's basically a sort of chariot for him at this point).  Kiddo maybe sort of seemed to like her music class.  Hard to tell.  She seemed slightly overwhelmed, but she didn't cry, so I'm calling it a win.

Late Sunday afternoon or early Sunday evening, Amy went to get a massage.  I had given her a gift certificate for a massage for her birthday, and she finally cashed it in.  While she was getting a massage, Kiddo, Raylan, and I met up with Ryan and Jamie at La Posada for dinner.
It was good to see them.  We got to talk a bit, and they helped me entertain the kids.

And that was about it.  No band practice over the weekend.

Work has been crazy this week.  There's a cafe in my building called The Granger Building CafĂ©, and I eat there a lot.  The food is fine, and it's something I can grab after a quick lunchtime workout.  Anyway, over time, I've gotten to sort of know the people who work there.  They're good folks, and they make me laugh.
I have had a sort of busy week, and one day they asked me why I wasn't smiling.  This led to a 10 minute rant by me about judges and lawyers who I felt had been giving me a hard time that morning.  They sort of laughed at my theatrics, and then when they brought me my chicken nachos, they told me that they had made them extra special to cheer me up...

The nachos worked.

Have a great Friday, everybody!

Birthday Weekend

Hey!  So I turned 46 this weekend!  46!!!
Hard to believe.

For the couple of weeks leading up to my birthday my back had been bothering me, but I went to the doctor last Thursday and got some meds, and I was feeling a lot better by the weekend.
In keeping with the tradition of the last few years, I took a vacation day on Friday so I could go see some live music and enjoy some South by Southwest.

Frank came with me this year, so that was cool.  We basically just rolled around South Congress for most of the afternoon checking out bands.

We saw a band from Australia called Bloods at Guero's.  They were cool.  I liked the singer's voice.  She reminded me of Go-Go's era Belinda Carlisle.  And we saw some other bands....

Katie Harkin.  Pretty cool.  Apparently has played with both Sleater Kinney
and Courtney Barnett.  If the internet is to be believed.  They had some
interesting, more-than-just-catchy songs.
Garrett LeBeau.  Bluesy and funky and really talented musicians.

Pat Byrne.  He's Irish, but he lives in Austin.  He was pretty good.
Catchy tunes, so I could see him taking off.

Frank, looooving the taste of his first ever michelada!

Dylan Cartlidge.  This guy was super funky.  More psychedelic hip hop funk than
Garrett LeBeua, though.
Groovy set!

The Waco Brothers
Nothing says SXSW more than packing a crowd into an alley
behind an art gallery to listen to an alt country punk
band from Chicago
In addition to those pictures, we saw Marie Chain, who is from Germany (performing with Tribe as a backing band), and Gabriella Cohen at SX San Jose.  They were both pretty good.

On Saturday my parents took the kids for the night.  In the early evening Amy and I headed over to Pinthouse Pizza to meet up with friends.
Reed, Ryan, Jamie, Ruben, Miguel, Diego, Kit, Shelly, and Spencer came out to celebrate and have a beer and some pizza with us.

Reed and me.  Both of us wearing party hats.
Who's 46?!?!

Marvel movie

The birthday revelers!

Diego with one of his baby slaves, Miguel.  I showed up for
Diego's birthday, so it was good of him
to return the favor!

Ryan seems really excited about the Asian jello gummie
fruit snacks!  ("Thanks", Kit!)
So we hung out and had pizza and drank some beer.  Later, Kit, Shelly, Spencer, Ryan, and Jamie came over to our house for a while to hang out.  We had another drink or two, and talked about NASA and local news anchors.  Spencer passed out in Kiddo's bed.

On Sunday, my actual birthday, Amy and I went out for breakfast, ran some errands, and exercised.  Then the kids came home.  There was lunch and naps, some playing in the yard, and a "family walk" (Raylan outran me by about half a mile on his balance bike, Amy chased him, and Kiddo threw her shoe out of the stroller, which later required a search and rescue mission).

On Sunday night we had a band practice with just Frank, Reed, and me.  It was fun.  We sounded pretty good, and it was just nice to get together with the guys and just hang out on my birthday.  The older you get, the more you appreciate your friends, I think.

And in that vein- thanks to everyone who made my birthday so nice!  Thanks to Amy for helping out so much on Friday and over the last couple of weeks while my messed up back has had me struggling to get by.  Thanks to Frank for being my SXSW wingman.  Thanks to Mom and Dad for helping out with the kids.  Thanks to Ryan, Jamie, Shelly, Kit, Ruben, and Miguel for coming out to help celebrate.

It was a really nice birthday!  I'm extremely lucky to have such great friends and family!

Hey! How's it going?

Our weekend was a little bumpy once again, but better than the weekend before.
Amy was sort of struggling with a cold last week, and on Thursday her ear started bothering her.
Well, by Friday night she had blood coming out of it.  Of course, this all happened too late to go see a doctor, so she scheduled an appointment online for Saturday morning.
Raylan doesn't have a fever anymore, but he still has been coughing a lot at night, and his energy level is a little lower than usual.  My back is slowly getting better, but is still sore.
Anyway, there wasn't much sleep to be had at our house on Friday night.  On Saturday morning Amy went to the doctor and got antibiotics for her ear infection.
Saturday we went to Great Clips and got haircuts for Raylan, Kiddo, and me.  Raylan let them use clippers on his head, so that was a big deal.

Just make me look cool.

Raylan, trying to show off his haircut while chewing on a lollipop,
refusing to let go of his tablet, and staring into the sun.
After the haircuts we went to the park for about half an hour to enjoy a little sunshine.

We had been planned to go out to do a spring celebration of family birthdays at a nice dinner downtown with our family and the McBrides (which had involved quite a bit of babysitter juggling after our first sitter cancelled), but we ended up not going due to illness and lack of sleep on Friday night.
We were sorry to have missed it.  Hope the rest of the fam had fun!

Saturday night we were much more successful in getting some sleep.

Sunday morning we met up with Kit, Shelly, and Spencer for brunch at Kerbey Lane.
It was great to see them and get a chance to hang out.

After we went out to breakfast with Shelly and Kit and Spencer, we all went over to Half Price Books.  It was fun to goof around in there with the kids.  Raylan and Bella got some books (including Where the Sidewalk Ends, which Raylan seems to find both interesting and possibly a little alarming).

The rest of Sunday was mostly chores and errands and messing around the house.  I went and picked up our new laptop computer over at Barton Creek Mall.  Raylan took pretty big naps both Saturday and Sunday, which is unusual and probably another sign (in addition to nighttime coughing) that he's still not quite back to full speed.

Guess who won?
Sunday evening I went to band practice.  Reed, Frank, Jim, and I were there.  We played a couple of new songs, and I thought we sounded pretty good.
And that was the weekend!

Hi!  Hope everyone is doing okay.

Well, it's been a sort of bumpy week here at our house.  Last Friday and into Saturday Amy had a cold.  On Monday Kiddo had a fever, so she stayed home from preschool with Amy, and I took her to the doctor when I got home.

She had an ear infection, so she got started on antibiotics.

Kiddo and I wait patiently to see the pediatrician.
So Amy was home on Monday and Tuesday with Kiddo.

On Wednesday, we got a call from Raylan's school saying Raylan had a fever, so we took him to the doctor to make sure he didn't have an ear infection.  The doctor said he probably had a cold with a fever (which is apparently a thing that happens to kids).

Stick out your tongue and say AHHHH!!!
So Thursday I took over kid duties.  Kiddo had come down with a fever again the evening before, so I kept he home with Raylan and me.  It was really cold outside, and we had a long sick day in the house.
Whatsa matter, Raylan?  Ya got no fight in ya after ya
caught a little fever?!?!

Kiddo was fever free again by mid-day on Thursday, so she went back to school on Friday.  Raylan stayed home with me.

By Friday night Kiddo had fever again, though, so on Saturday she went to the doctor again.  By now she had a double ear infection and the initial does of amoxicillin wasn't working, so they switched her to a different kind of antibiotic.

Kiddo's face is blurred out, so you're going to have to trust
me when I say that she screamed for over 30 minutes straight
while we waited to see the doctor.  She was not happy to be there
for the second time in a week.

Kiddo started improving pretty rapidly once they switched the antibiotic.
Saturday night, though, because we'd had such a boring week, Raylan decided to throw us a curveball by slipping in the bathtub and whacking his chin.  He knocked it right on the edge of the tub and split it open, soooo... he went back to the doctor.  Amy took him this time, and he got glue stitches.

On Sunday, Raylan actually asked to take a nap, an act which was an obvious sign of illness, given his usual fight-to-the-death stance against any sort of resting during the daytime.  When he got up from nap, we took his temperature, and he had a fever.
We all piled in the car together and took him to the doctor.  They ran a flu test, and... he had the flu.
The doctor thought that this was a separate illness from the original cold (since his temperature seemed to have gone up and down), but she wasn't exactly sure.

To add yet another layer of fun to the weekend, somehow I messed up my back (possibly at the gym on Saturday).  By Monday morning I could barely walk, and had to take myself to the doctor and miss work.

My mom, who celebrated her birthday Monday, got to celebrate it by taking care of Raylan and keeping him over night.
Oh well- she loves Raylan, and hopefully she and Dad had a good visit with him.
We love you, Mom!!!!

So, while not exactly tragic, it hasn't been one of our better weeks.

Kiddo and Amy try to catch a few winks while recovering from various things.

Hope the rest of this week is good for everyone!!
